2009, Stage 3 | San Jose to Modesto

Stage three gets off to a great start by taking the peloton immediately over Sierra Road. This climb ascends 1,930 feet of elevation and could proof to be a great launching pad for an all day breakaway. Once in the valley the sprinter teams will surely put the hammer down  so the break won't steal the day in Modesto.

Leipheimer Retains the Leader Jersey

As anticipated Stage three proved to be a day for the sprinters. The morning had two categorized climbs allowing a breakaway to gain a 5 minute lead over the Peloton which they kept through most of the race. The break was caught shortly before the circuit allowing the sprinter to fight it out in a bunch sprint. Thor Hushovd of Cervelo Test Team came up with the goods and held of the field to take the win.
